Where did you get the idea for Picnics by Hannah?
I discovered there were a lack of date options in the mountains. The idea just came to me one day and I acted immediately and launched one month after having the initial idea. I wanted to use my events management experience, creativity, and my love of nature to create something special and a bit luxurious for visitors and locals to enjoy.
How did you get started in the early days?
I launched in April 2017, and my first group picnic was for my mum’s birthday – it was the perfect opportunity to showcase my picnics! I had minimal picnic gear then, so the set-up was fairly basic but enough to get me going. That night my sister helped me craft my first Instagram post as a business (I’ll admit I wasn’t great at Instagram in those days and I used to call my sister before every post). I was still working my day job so I just let the business grow organically. In October I was so grateful to be able to leave my day job and focus purely on the business.
What makes Picnics by Hannah so unique?
Picnics by Hannah isn’t just selling a picnic, it’s about a once in a lifetime experience and a different way to enjoy the beauty that the Blue Mountains has to offer. Our deluxe couples picnics ooze romance and indulgence. They take the effort out of having to try set something up yourself and really are the perfect way to propose, celebrate an anniversary, birthday or just enjoy some peaceful time with your loved one.
What are your favourite lookouts you recommend?
I have a list of my favourites, however I keep them a bit on the down low so that our picnics are nice and private. During summer I run sunset picnics at Lincoln’s Rock in Wentworth Falls which is already well known among locals. The sunsets are so epic there I would recommend it to anyone visiting the mountains.
What do you think makes the Blue Mountains so magical, especially for those big life events such as proposals?
The views in the Blue Mountains really are one of a kind. I have travelled a lot domestically and internationally and I haven’t ever come across a place like the Blue Mountains – especially so close to a city! The Blue Mountains is practical to visit, and you don’t have to hike for six hours to get a good view. The views are breathtaking and create the perfect setting for romance and proposals!
Where is your favourite place in the mountains for a date with your husband?
As parents we don’t get to go away from the house at night very often, so we bring our dates to us! I’ll make a cheese platter, chuck a picnic rug on our deck and enjoy some wine as the sun sets.
What is your favourite mountains lookout and why?
This is such a tough question, but I think my favourite views would be from Narrow Neck Plateau in Katoomba. I run along here regularly and it’s such a special spot with views on either side offering such a contrast. Govetts Leap in Blackheath would have to be up there on my list of favourites as well.
