Mouse, Fox, Owl, Snake and the Gruffalo are hiding in the deep, dark wood – can you spot them?
The self-guided, augmented reality experience - The Gruffalo Spotters Trail – features the much-loved characters from the children’s book, the Gruffalo, in rainforest at Scenic World from 24 February until the end of August 2024.
Now the whole family can foxtrot with Fox, have a hoot with Owl, hissssss with Snake, make friends with Mouse and get to know the Gruffalo. Simply download the free Gruffalo Spotter Aus 2 App before setting off on an adventure on the world’s steepest train, the Scenic Railway, into the Jamison Valley.
Follow the clues to search the deep, dark woods along Scenic World’s elevated boardwalk and discover interactive signs that trigger the appearances of the characters. Using the app, you'll be able to take photos and videos of yourself interacting with the characters as the signs along the walk activate Mouse, Fox, Owl, Snake and the Gruffalo.
Then, ride the Scenic Cableway out of the valley and back to the main building and catch the Scenic Skyway for a bird's eye view of the forest.
Wrap up your adventure with a selfie with the Gruffalo in real life with meet and greets (scheduled throughout the day on weekends and every day during the school holidays).

Ride the world's steepest railway
Your adventure starts by heading into the Jamison Valley, so why not catch a ride on the world's steepest train? Barrelling through the tunnel and down the cliff at up to 52°, check out incredible views of Mount Solitary and the Jamison Valley. You can take the Scenic Railway into and out of the valley on your quest to spot your friends from the Gruffalo. You can catch the train as many times as you like with your ticket.
Spot characters from the Gruffalo along the Scenic Walkway
Time to search the deep, dark woods along Scenic World’s elevated boardwalk! Look out for the interactive signs that trigger the appearances of the characters on your phone.
Using the free Gruffalo Spotter app, visitors will be able to take photos and videos of themselves with the characters as the five signs along the walk activate Mouse, Fox, Owl, Snake and the Gruffalo - foxtrot with The Fox, have a hoot with The Owl, hissssss with The Snake, make friends with The Mouse and get to know The Gruffalo.
The Gruffalo Spotter Trail takes place along the 30 minute boardwalk, but there's also to 10 and 50 minute routes to explore.
Ride the Scenic Cableway
The Southern Hemisphere's steepest (and most awesome) cable car. Drop off the side of the escarpment, wave hello to Meehni, Wimlah and Gunnedoo (aka the Three Sisters) and head into the ancient Jurassic rainforest of the Jamison Valley. From here, join the search for Mouse, Fox, Owl and the Gruffalo along our elevated boardwalks. You can catch the Scenic Cableway into or out of the valley as many times as you like
Back to up the top and hop on the Skyway
When you've come back up from the Jamison Valley you can explore the dedicated Gruffalo area in our retail store - you may even bump into a real life Gruffalo (meet and greets are scheduled on weekends and every day during school holidays). Then take a ride on the iconic Scenic Skyway to cruise 270m above the forest floor and enjoy the best view of the entire valley, Orphan Rock, Three Sisters and Katoomba Falls.
Tap on the get/install button. Then;
1. Open the app and allow access to your camera and photos
2. Arrive at Scenic World and Start The Gruffalo Trail – keep your eyes peeled for signs.
3. By keeping the signs in the centre of the screen, the characters will come to life on your handset
4. Hold the red button to film, or hit the yellow button to take a snapshot
FAQs
Is Gruffalo included in my Scenic World ticket?
Entry to The Gruffalo Spotters Trail is included with any Scenic World Ticket. The Gruffalo Trail is located along our 30-minute elevated boardwalk in the Jamison rainforest.
What's difference between the Unlimited Discovery Pass and Gruffalo Spotters Trail ticket?
Nothing at all! We just needed to create two tickets to accommodate people booking in advance. Every Scenic World ticket includes unlimited access to the Gruffalo Trail, boardwalks and rides.
How long will The Gruffalo be at Scenic World?
The Gruffalo will be calling Scenic World home from 24 February until end of August 2024.

- Is your device compatible? Note the app is only compatible for the accepted Apple and Android devices as listed below:
Apple: The Gruffalo Spotter has been developed for iOS 11 and later iPhone (6s and above), iPad and iPad Pro. Previous versions of these devices will not be fully supported.
Android: The Gruffalo Spotter has been developed for Android 7+ AR compatible devices (S7, Pixel and up). Previous versions of these devices may not be fully supported.
If the app is still not downloading, try turning your phone off for two minutes, turning it back on and trying to download again.
Do I need internet connection to use the app?
To avoid delays and get spotting straight away, we recommend customers pre-download the Gruffalo Spotters app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store before visiting Scenic World. (Mobile Data Charges may apply, check with your Mobile Phone Provider on Data Limits). Once installed, the application no longer requires a data connection when you visit us!
Why can’t I view the photos on the app?
Photos are saved directly to your personal camera roll / photos outside of the app – note that this is dependent on whether you gave permission for the app to access your camera/photos (if you didn’t, follow the steps above)
On the app, you can only preview the last photo you took, you do not have the ability to swipe through all images captured.
Depending on the device, follow the steps below to view all photos:
– Apple: Open your photo app and click on ‘photos’ – this is saved in your camera roll
– Android: Open your photo app and click on ‘Albums’ different to IPhone, photos are saved in a generated album under your ‘album file’ called ‘the Gruffalo trail ‘
It is not letting me take photos?
Have you given permission for the app to access your camera and image gallery once initially opened after downloading? Photos are automatically added to your device’s gallery. Please ensure you give the app permission to access your photos when prompted once you download the app. If you accidently said ‘no’ to allow access to your camera, please follow the steps below according to your device:
Apple
– Go to your Settings > Privacy > Camera > Gruffalo Spotter AUS
– Also verify that the camera is enabled in: Settings > General > Restrictions
Android
– An error message will appear when you attempt to use the app
– Click ‘close’ – this will close the app
– Reopen the app – this will give you another opportunity to give approval to allowing camera access so the app can work correctly
